ABOUT PRODUCTID 23427
This pair of ceramic bookends, designed by Mathilde Flögl in the 1920s, exemplifies the refined craftsmanship of Central European Art Nouveau. Each of the two figures features a parrot with warm, saturated yellow plumage, accentuated by green, red, and blue details on the wings and tail. The birds perch on stylized tree stumps painted in deep, glossy shades of brown and black, with green bases suggesting grass or moss and small red floral touches. The entire surface is covered with a high-gloss glaze that enhances the color vibrancy and lends a subtly reflective texture. The proportions are harmonious, with elongated parrot tails and softly rounded forms that echo the spirit of the Wiener Werkstätte movement. Visible hand-painted brushstrokes and slight differences between the pieces emphasize their artisanal, unique character. Measuring 19 cm in height, 16 cm in length, and 9.5 cm in width. Very good condition, with minor traces of use typical for the age: slight glaze abrasions, no cracks or losses, all elements are original. These bookends carry the voice of an era when craft and art infused daily life. The slightly stylized parrots seem to narrate a fascination with nature and color that defined early 20th-century European decorative arts. The glossy ceramic surface reflects light in a way reminiscent of Viennese salons—spaces filled with vibrant accents and finely crafted objects, where function and decoration are inseparably linked.
