This hand-carved figurine of a bear with cub, crafted from solid walnut, exemplifies rare Ainu artistry from early 20th-century Japan. Its deep, cool-toned brown reveals subtle variations: a matte finish contrasted by satin highlights on raised features, amplifying the fur’s naturalistic texture. Carefully incised carving captures the organic flow and density of fur, while glass-set eyes reflect light with remarkable realism. The adult bear’s mouth reveals a meticulously detailed and complete set of off-white teeth. Anatomical balance is evident in the robust, elongated form of the adult and the smaller cub closely nestled at its side—both seamlessly united in a single, undivided block of wood. All features, including claws and ears, remain clean and sharp. Despite its age, the figurine is in excellent condition, displaying minimal patina confined to recesses and no signs of restoration or damage.
