ABOUT PRODUCTID 36903
The amphora designed by Zbigniew Horbowy for the 'Barbara' Artistic Glassworks in Polanica-Zdrój epitomizes the refined craftsmanship of Polish modernist glass of the 1970s. The vessel’s tall, slender silhouette—standing 37 cm high—features an elongated neck flowing gently into a softly rounded body. Hand-formed in double-layered soda-lime glass, the amphora displays subtle tonal transitions: a delicate, almost ivory exterior layer gradually gives way to a vibrant orange interior, with saturated red hues emerging wherever the glass narrows or thickens. The handle, made of transparent, amber-orange glass, is seamlessly joined to the body, serving as a dynamic compositional accent. The spout is finished in a deep, intense red, adding a striking color contrast. The base is flat and carefully polished. The piece is preserved in very good condition, with no visible damage or signs of wear. This amphora embodies an era of experimentation with color and light, so characteristic of Polish glass from the 1970s. Its transparency and chromatic depth complement the organic form, as if the material itself wished to recount the story of its gradual transformation from molten mass into sculptural vessel. In daylight, the glass reveals successive layers and shades—from pastel pinks to vibrant reds—inviting the viewer to discover new nuances with every shift in illumination. The amphora can be displayed on a minimalist console or low sideboard, allowing its nuanced colors and sculptural lines to take center stage. It may be paired with other mid-century modern pieces—such as ceramics with simple, geometric forms or artworks in calm, pastel tones. In a contemporary interior, it also works well as a stand-alone collector’s object, highlighting the individual character of the space.
