‘Kolorowy sen’ is a historical tempera work created in Berlin in 1881 and represents the tradition of 19th-century architectural graphics. Made in monochrome lithography, the piece was published as part of an architects’ reference portfolio – showing the decorative capital of an iron column from the Eberswalde asylum. Bearing the publication date, portfolio number, and artist’s signature, the work is presented in a wide, cream passe-partout and a slim black wooden frame with glass, ensuring archival protection for the paper. The sheet measures 25 × 34 cm; the framed piece 38.5 × 48.5 cm. The overall condition is very good, with no visible damage, discoloration, or signs of aging. This drawing echoes the era of engineering ambition and architectural rigor — late 19th-century industrial Germany left its mark even in structural details, such as the precise depiction of the iron column’s capital. There is technical clarity, but also a subtle artistry in how the ornamental motifs are rendered. Originally distributed for inspiration among architects, the lithograph now invites contemplation of a time when infrastructure could be celebrated as a carefully wrought form of applied art. This historical rendering may be combined with industrial furniture or alongside modernist accessories — suiting placement above a wooden console, where the refined line work finds visual resonance. In a collector’s study, next to Art Nouveau prints or austere metal forms, the piece may offset a contemporary interior’s cool color palette. It would also work well in an eclectic space among other architectural motifs or design books, emphasizing the interplay of past and present traditions.
