ABOUT PRODUCTID 11722
The Mandarin armchair, designed by Ettore Sottsass and manufactured by Knoll International in Italy at the end of the 1980s, is a quintessential expression of Italian postmodernism inspired by the Memphis movement. Its structure relies on four straight, cylindrical legs lacquered in deep black. The seat and backrest are upholstered in matte, black cotton velvet from the French brand Casamance, giving the surface a rich, tactile character. The most distinctive feature is the pair of bent tubular steel armrests, powder-coated in a saturated, glossy red that wraps the chair in a bold, continuous arc. The formal clarity of the regular, minimalist silhouette and the high-contrast color palette evoke the graphic and playful language of Memphis design. The connections between the seat, backrest, and armrests are precise and visible, while the chair’s proportions—with a gently reclined back and a sturdy, yet visually balanced seat—ensure comfortable use. The condition is very good: the upholstery has been professionally restored, and the armrests show only minor paint chips typical of age, which do not affect functionality.Mandarin speaks with the unmistakable
