ABOUT PRODUCTID 9519
The Model 53 armchair, designed by Jaroslav Šmídek and produced by TON in Czechoslovakia during the 1960s, exemplifies the principles of mid-century modern style. Its structure is based on bent beech wood, which forms both the gently curved armrests and the slightly splayed legs. These elements are finished with an oak-toned stain and sealed with a semi-matte lacquer, highlighting the natural wood grain. The seat and backrest are upholstered in high-quality, deep black fabric with a soft, velvety texture, complementing the chair’s restrained and functional aesthetic. The compact proportions (82 cm high, 70 cm wide, 57 cm deep) and the seamless integration of armrests into the silhouette reflect the unity of form and comfort. The chair has undergone a comprehensive professional restoration. Condition: fully restored, with no visible signs of use and all elements faithful to the original. This chair tells the story of an era when simplicity and comfort were essential. Its arched lines and balanced proportions evoke the spirit of the 1960s, a time when the modernist vocabulary of form intersected with everyday functionality. The bent beech wood speaks of artisanal skill, while the deep black upholstery hints at the restraint and versatility characteristic of Central European design of that period. The armchair seems to suggest evenings spent in conversation, bathed in soft lamplight, where design served both aesthetics and comfort. Model 53 may be paired with a low sideboard in light wood to accentuate the contrast between the dark upholstery and natural finish. It works well in both minimalist and eclectic collector’s interiors, especially when surrounded by geometric rugs
