ABOUT PRODUCTID 28906
Model 53 is a design by Jaroslav Šmídek, produced by TON in Czechoslovakia during the 1960s. The chair features a sturdy frame of bent beech wood: the armrests and legs form smooth, flowing lines that highlight the rhythmic character of mid-century modern style. The seat and backrest are generously padded and upholstered in a light, cool-toned grey fabric with a subtle, slightly textured weave and a matte finish. The absence of visible seams or tufting gives the form a clean, cohesive look; visible screws at the armrest joints emphasize the honest, functional approach typical of the period. The wooden elements are finished in a medium oak stain and semi-matte lacquer, revealing the natural grain and lending a calm, timeless expression. The armchair is in excellent, fully restored condition—free of signs of wear, damage, or discoloration. In this form, the Model 53 armchair tells the story of the 1960s, when Central European modernism adopted softer, more humanist shapes. The curved armrests evoke the gesture of an inviting hand, while the broad, comfortable seat speaks to the desire for everyday comfort within modern interiors. The beech wood, carefully bent and polished, recalls the TON workshops, where craft met thoughtful design. The cool grey upholstery underlines the era's restraint, yet opens the space to light, tranquility, and focus. This armchair can be paired with a geometric mid-century coffee table or a minimalist floor lamp with a slender profile to create an intimate lounge area. It works well against light-colored walls, surrounded by natural wood and textiles—for example, with an oak side
