ABOUT PRODUCTID 11733
Designed by Jan Bocan in 1972 for the Czechoslovak Embassy in Stockholm, this armchair was produced in a limited edition by Dřevopodnik Holešov. Its construction uses bent plywood, finished with a light, honey-toned European walnut veneer that highlights both craftsmanship and ergonomic thinking. The upholstery presents a warm, olive green tone with a matte finish, subtly contrasting with the wood. The form is based on soft, flowing lines: armrests and legs are a single, rounded structure, while the high, gently contoured backrest provides stable support. Visible steel fasteners between the seat and frame are intentionally exposed, emphasizing the piece’s functional honesty. The style fuses mid-century modern with brutalist influences, apparent in geometric divisions and exposed structural details. The armchair is in good condition for its age—minor signs of use such as slight discoloration or small veneer losses are present, but no major damage. This armchair carries the narrative of the 1970s—a period when Czechoslovakia sought its own identity in international architecture and design. Its form echoes an open gesture: the soft arcs of the frame reflect Bocan’s architectural visions, while the olive upholstery mingles with natural light, evoking a sense of calm and understated diplomatic presence. Each detail, from the flowing edges to the exposed joints, speaks of respect for material and structure, as though the chair aims to tell of the discreet luxury of embassies during an era of détente. The Jan Bocan arm
