ABOUT PRODUCTID 20198
This openwork door knocker from circa 1900 is a fine example of Austrian Art Nouveau craftsmanship. Made of chased and gilded brass, it measures 14.5 cm in height and 9.5 cm in width. The central section is adorned with a stylized shell motif, surrounded by flowing lines, leaf forms, and decorative scrolls typical of the Art Nouveau period. The backplate is elaborately shaped with cut-outs and raised, chased patterns, while the robust handle features engraved lines and leafy details. The surface is a warm, golden hue with areas of natural patina and subtle traces of use. On the reverse, the inscription “Ges. Gesch. M.” and catalogue number 1581 are present. The knocker is preserved in very good condition, showing only minor scratches and patina, with all original elements intact and no visible repairs. This knocker echoes the spirit of the turn of the century, when Austrian Secession embraced organic forms and meticulous ornamentation. The gilded brass recalls the glow of historic townhouses, while the shell and leaf motifs seem to whisper the presence of nature woven into urban architecture. Gentle signs of age evoke the countless hands that have touched this piece over decades, greeting and bidding farewell to guests—a silent witness to the stories of a bygone era.The knocker can serve as a decorative accent on historic or period-style entrance doors, pairing particularly well with dark wood or lacquered surfaces in deep tones, where the golden brass will gain contrast and depth. It can be combined with classic exterior lighting, wrought iron hinges, and ornate house numbers; it will fit seamlessly
