ABOUT PRODUCTID 23300
This barrel-shaped money box, produced by WMF in Württemberg circa 1900, is a compact example of Art Nouveau metalwork, measuring 7.5 cm in height with a diameter of 4.8 cm. Crafted from brass and plated with silver, its surface displays a cool, subtly warm silver tone with gentle patina and darker accents within the guilloché engravings. Three horizontal, raised bands encircle the form, emphasizing its geometric solidity and classic proportions. The top features a finely executed, organic guilloché ornament—an Art Nouveau hallmark—with a coin slot skillfully integrated into the design. The closure is fitted to accommodate a small padlock. Construction is robust, with seamless joints and a matte finish that reveals fine, even texturing. The overall condition is very good, with only minor signs of age-related wear, no repairs, and all original elements intact. This small utilitarian object narrates the story of the early 20th century, when the Art Nouveau movement infused everyday items with organic motifs and fluid lines. The money box seems to whisper of an era when saving money held an almost ritual significance, and every detail reflected a commitment to craftsmanship and permanence. Its silvery-matte surface, guilloché embellishments, and stout barrel form evoke the ambiance of a European fin de siècle salon, where even the most modest accessories embodied the ambitions and aesthetics of their time. The money box could serve as a refined accent in a study, on a desk, or within a cabinet of curiosities. It would work well in collector’s interiors, alongside items from the turn of the 20th century—such as silver cigarette cases, fountain pens, or porcelain miniatures. One might pair it with a mahogany jewelry
