ABOUT PRODUCTID 12487
This early 20th-century Art Nouveau shoehorn, crafted in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, is made from polished buffalo bone. The construction features an elongated, tapered blade ending in a distinctively spiral-carved handle that seamlessly transitions into smoothly profiled elements, giving the piece a cohesive, flowing shape. Its warm ivory hue with subtle yellowish undertones highlights natural bone veining and gentle color gradations, while the gently glossy finish accentuates the organic structure. Prominent longitudinal grooves along the blade add both reinforcement and a rhythm characteristic of Art Nouveau design. The shoehorn remains in good, original condition; a small chip at the very end attests to period use. This piece carries with it the spirit of an era enamored with organic forms – the spiral handle evokes botanical motifs, and the creamy sheen of bone softly captures and reflects the light, as if to cloak the object in a quiet aura of bygone days. Each finishing detail seems to narrate a story of early 20th-century routines, when even utility pieces were shaped by an appreciation for elegant, functional artistry and understated ornamentation.Such a shoehorn could be displayed as a decorative accent in a wardrobe or entrance hall, paired with other Art Nouveau or historic accessories – for example, resting atop a classic wooden console with a matching period mirror, or as a sculptural element in a minimalist interior. Combined with pale ceramics, brass hooks or an upholstered bench, it highlights the authenticity of the form, bringing forward the ambience of a pre-war home from the turn of the century.
