ABOUT PRODUCTID 12749
This early 20th-century Swedish Art Nouveau sugar bowl offers a nuanced example of craftsmanship balancing refined form and practical use. The piece comprises a round openwork metal holder with a band of characteristic Art Nouveau cutwork encircling the body, and a removable, fully transparent glass insert. The metal is finished in a warm, aged brass tone with a matte patina, showing darker areas of oxidation and time-induced discoloration, especially on the handle and lower portions. The wide, arched handle is attached with visible rivets and shaped with gentle curves, echoing the natural, flowing outlines of the Secessionist style. The construction is supported by four small spherical feet, subtly elevating the vessel above the table. The glass liner fits precisely within the metal frame and features a smooth, clear finish. Traces of age—spots, tarnish, and fine scratches—are present on the metal, attesting to its authenticity and minimal restoration. The sugar bowl remains in very good condition, its patina and surface marks consistent with original early 20th-century tableware. This container could recount the story of a turn-of-the-century era: the undulating geometry of its openwork, the softness of its curves, and the embedded function in everyday rituals of tea or coffee. Every line—some submerged beneath time’s patina—returns thought to a period where table objects sought to harmonize utility with the natural, understated elegance of Art Nouveau. It is a piece that remembers joyful afternoons and quiet domestic ceremonies at the dawn of modernity. The sugar bowl may be paired with porcelain tableware with floral motifs or contemporary, minimalist forms that will highlight its subtle historic presence. It would perfectly accompany a white linen tablecloth or be displayed on raw wood in an eclectic dining space or a salon inspired by Secessionist, classical, or stylized modern decor. In the company of pressed glassware or pure linen napkins, it gains an understated timelessness, adding an extra layer of narrative to daily rituals.
