This Art Nouveau vanity mirror from France, circa 1890, embodies the sculptural elegance of the fin de siècle era. The base is carved from green onyx, its surface traversed by natural veins of cream and brown, contrasting with the intricate, gilded metalwork above. The metal, both copper-plated and gold-gilded, reveals a warm antique palette—from matte reddish undertones to glossy golden highlights. At its heart sits a winged elf—a delicately rendered female figure, seated with one leg tucked beneath her on an organic-form chair. She raises a wreath of bulrushes, which forms the organic frame for the original beveled crystal mirror. The composition captures Art Nouveau’s fascination with nature and fantasy, while the craftsmanship is evident in the modeling of the elf’s features, her wings, and the botanical details.
