ABOUT PRODUCTID 22378
This ashtray or decorative bowl, designed by Rudolf Jurnikl for Sklo Union Rosice in Czechoslovakia, was produced in the 1960s. Made from thick, hand-formed glass in a deep, mass-colored cobalt blue, the piece features a seamless, flowing silhouette with asymmetrical, undulating edges and a pronounced central well. The wide rim and substantial thickness give the object a sculptural presence, while the perfectly smooth, highly polished surface accentuates dramatic refractions of light—revealing subtle gradations of blue from intense to luminous tones. The piece is entirely uniform in color, free of any decorative accents or visible texture. Its base is flat and stable, with no visible joints or fittings. Preserved in excellent condition, it shows no signs of use, damage, or restoration. This object embodies the bold vision of 1960s utilitarian glass—an era when Czechoslovakian design embraced experimentation with form, color, and the interplay of light. Though conceived for everyday use, the ashtray tells a story of a time when even functional objects aspired to the status of small sculptures. The cobalt glass evokes a sense of modernity, while the fluid lines and reflective highlights speak to a fascination with movement and organic shapes. It conjures an image of a modernist living room, where daylight plays across surfaces and design is both present and poetic. In interiors, it can be paired with other glass pieces from the era or with raw wood and metal surfaces to highlight its brutalist legacy. It works well as a singular accent on a low coffee table, sideboard, or shelf in a mid-century modern living room, but also in eclectic collector’s spaces where interplay of light and color will enhance its sculptural impact. Consider combining it with minimalist ceramics, smoky glass, or geometric forms to create a dialogue between materials
