This vintage art glass ashtray, attributed to Jaroslav Beránek for Skrdlovice and produced in the 1960s, is a notable example of Central European organic modernism. Created in the Czech glassworks renowned for artistic utility glass, it features a substantial, hand-blown construction in warm honey-amber colored glass. The freeform silhouette, with softly flowing, asymmetrical edges, references water-polished pebbles and natural shapes, expressing the organic modernist language so typical of postwar Czech design. Lacking contrasting accents, the subtle transitions—from lighter to deeper amber tones—create an impression of depth and luminous shading. Both interior and exterior surfaces are perfectly smooth and polished to a high gloss, with the translucent body refracting light to accentuate the design's fluid contours. Sturdy in hand, the piece measures 16 cm wide, 7 cm high, and approximately 10 cm deep, made entirely of glass. It remains in excellent condition, with only minimal, nearly invisible traces of age underneath, typical for a vintage object. The spirit of the 1960s resonates through this piece—a period during which Czech designers explored new formal languages, celebrating materiality and organic experimentation. The ashtray tells the story of an era where art and utility met in sculptural design: its fluid mass suggests the hand of the creator liberated in glass, while the amber glow within evokes long afternoons and languid gatherings.
