ABOUT PRODUCTID 15995
The No 204 ashtray, designed by Wit Płażewski in 1957, is a hallmark of postwar Polish modernist faience ceramics. Crafted from tin-glazed ceramic, its form is distinctly organic and asymmetrical, with gently rising edges and subtle undulations defining the silhouette. The exterior is finished in a warm, semi-matte orange, enriched by hand-painted vertical stripes in deep black and creamy off-white. The interior reveals a smooth, glossy light cream glaze, offering a gentle contrast to the lively and patterned exterior. The seamless transition between the bowl and the elevated rim demonstrates careful handcrafting, while the glazed surface feels silky to the touch. Color separation is achieved with precision, and the rhythmic interplay of bands evokes the abstract dynamism typical of the mid-century period. There are no chips, cracks, or significant signs of wear; only minimal, age-appropriate crazing is visible upon close inspection. The ashtray remains in very good vintage condition. This piece embodies the dialogue between Polish mid-century design and the energetic abstraction of its era. The interplay of black-and-cream stripes against the warm orange background conjures the spirit of the 1950s—a time when everyday objects became canvases for expression. Each hand-painted line records the artist
