This art glass ashtray, attributed to Josef Hospodka for the Czech Chribska glassworks and dating from the 1960s, is a notable example of Central European mid-century design. Created using freeform glassblowing techniques, the piece features an organically sculpted body with dynamically ruffled, undulating edges. Its core displays a rich, saturated crimson red that gradually fades into translucent tones and finally into completely clear glass at the outer rim and solid pedestal base. The color transition is seamless, with a high-gloss, tactile finish that accentuates the glass's light-catching qualities as well as its sculptural folds. Its sculptural lines seem to capture a frozen moment of molten movement, while the crimson heart suggests the glowing core of freshly worked glass. Light reflects across the ruffled surface, evoking the dynamic, creative energy of the mid-century glass studio and the artistic freedom that defined 1960s Czechoslovakian modernism. The piece can be displayed alongside other 1960s furnishings – for example, on a
