ABOUT PRODUCTID 29571
This vintage Murano glass ashtray or bowl from the 1960s exemplifies Italian glassmaking expertise, crafted using the sommerso technique that accentuates color depth and contrast between layers. The thick, weighty form features an organic, asymmetrical shape, highlighted by a deep cobalt blue core with subtle transitions into lighter blue and clear glass at the rim. The undulating, curled corners and mirror-like polished surface emphasize its mid-century modern character. The transparent outer layer envelops the colored interior, producing a fluid visual effect. The piece is preserved in excellent collector’s condition, with minor age-appropriate wear at the base and the original, faintly visible label. The form of this object tells the story of Italian modernism, where glass became a medium for both light and color. The cobalt interior, like a captured drop of pigment, is suspended within a clear casing, creating a dialogue between intensity and tranquility. Organic lines and flowing refractions evoke the creative spirit of 1960s Italy, when functional art was elevated to the status of small-scale sculpture—simultaneously utilitarian and decorative. This bowl can serve as a refined accent on a coffee table, console, or sideboard in a mid-century modern or eclectic collector’s interior. It may be paired with metal, dark wood, or matte ceramics—contrasting materials will enhance its glossy sheen. It also works as a vide poche for keys or small items in an entryway, where shifting light across the glass surface adds further visual depth. Dimensions: width 12 cm, depth 12 cm, height 6 cm. Glass is of considerable thickness, characteristic of sommerso technique. Excellent condition with no visible damage; minimal wear consistent with age may occur at the base. Original maker’s label remains on the underside.
