ABOUT PRODUCTID 29662
This Murano glass ashtray or decorative bowl, crafted in the 1960s, exemplifies the artistry of Italian mid-century glassmaking. Created using the sommerso technique—originating in 1930s Murano and widely embraced in mid-century modern design—the thick, hand-blown glass features deep cobalt blue, lighter blue, and subtle turquoise tones, all encased in a substantial layer of clear glass. The piece has an organic, freeform shape with pronounced, curled corners and asymmetrical lines; its harmonious proportions—broad, shallow basin and rounded walls—highlight its decorative potential. The original label remains faintly visible on the base. The ashtray is preserved in excellent vintage condition, with no chips or cracks and only light, age-appropriate wear underneath.
This object speaks with the voice of 1960s Italian design, when light and color converged in everyday forms. The sommerso layers draw the eye like the depths of a lagoon: blue tones suspended in clear glass create a sense of movement and transformation, as if each viewing angle reveals a new story of water, light, and hue. The organic rim suggests a freedom of form characteristic of the era, when artistry and function intertwined. Each fold and curve of the glass catches the light, giving the impression that the piece is never static—always reflecting its environment in new ways.
The bowl can be placed on a contemporary coffee table as a striking accent in a mid-century-inspired living room or as part of an eclectic art glass collection. It functions beautifully as an ashtray,
