ABOUT PRODUCTID 11699
This Biedermeier crystal compote from the second half of the 19th century exemplifies Central European glassmaking, originating in the Bohemian region (now Czech Republic). Crafted from transparent crystal with a cool, faint bluish undertone, it features a wide, shallow bowl with a scalloped, ribbed rim and vertically faceted walls that refract light to create a play of reflections. The baluster-shaped stem, adorned with hand-cut facets, flows into a solid, hexagonal base. The composition is characterized by decorative restraint and harmonious proportions, hallmarks of the Biedermeier style. The surface is smooth and glassy, with visible chips on the rim and base and a natural patina that attests to the piece’s authentic age. No signs of restoration are present; the compote remains in a worn condition typical of antiques from this era.The form of this compote evokes the atmosphere of late 19th-century bourgeois salons, where crystal served not only as a marker of status but also as a vessel for light and daily ceremony. Faceted panels capture daylight, transforming the simple act of serving fruit or sweets into a small ritual. Chips and patina inscribed in the glass quietly narrate the passage of time, allowing the object to ‘tell’ the story of past gatherings and celebrations. This compote may be displayed on a dark wood sideboard or in a glass-fronted cabinet, where, paired with porcelain or vintage books, it highlights a historical continuity within the interior. It can be combined with other Biedermeier pieces but will also find its place in eclectic, collector’s spaces, where material quality and formal simplicity engage in a dialogue with modernity. As a central accent on a dining or living room table, it draws the eye with its detailing, while the crystal’s clarity subtly brightens its surroundings.
