ABOUT PRODUCTID 13947
This Biedermeier drinking glass, known as a 'szklenica,' originates from 19th-century Bohemia and exemplifies refined utility glassware of the era. Crafted from slightly translucent glass in a deep, saturated ruby red, its surface is adorned with intricately cut, clear medallions surrounded by stylized fern or palm leaves and delicate floral motifs, all arranged in a repeating geometric pattern. The vessel’s profile is classically Biedermeier: flaring outwards at the rim and gently tapering at the base, creating an hourglass silhouette. The polished surface and crisp, deep cuts speak to the high standard of Bohemian glassmaking in the mid-19th century. The piece is preserved in very good condition—free from chips, cracks, or visible restoration; the engraved decorations are clearly perceptible to the touch. The szklenica reflects the voice of Central European Biedermeier – its form and ornamentation embody a mix of neoclassical symmetry and botanical inspiration, characteristic of bourgeois interiors of the time. The lustrous ruby glass interwoven with geometric motifs echoes candlelit evenings and rituals of everyday life in a bygone century. The engraved decorations capture and reflect the light, creating a shifting interplay of brightness as if the piece carries within it the memory of past celebrations and attention to detail. This glass could be displayed as a collector’s item in a glazed cabinet or atop a Biedermeier sideboard, yet would also find its place in more eclectic interiors, paired with period porcelain or contrasting contemporary tableware. It might be used on the table during special occasions, and, surrounded by wooden accents, would underscore the stylised spirit of history-inspired interiors. It can be combined with other richly coloured glasses or placed alongside metal candlesticks to highlight the cut detailing and depth of the ruby hue.
