ABOUT PRODUCTID 29703
This very large decorative 'Ikora' bowl is a design by Karl Wiedmann for WMF, created in Germany in the 1920s/30s. Made from thick, clear art glass using the patented Ikora technique, the bowl features a crackled effect and organic color streaks achieved by oxide and powder fusion. The visual composition is striking: a wide, reddish-brown band encircles the rim, while the center displays radiating streaks in brown and mossy green, softly blending into the transparent glass. The glossy, smooth surface bears subtle, irregular textural variations typical of Ikora glass. The piece is notably substantial—over 3 kg in weight and 36 cm in diameter—emphasizing its presence and robust character. The form reflects the Art Deco idiom, marrying geometric and organic elements in a harmonious balance. There are no chips, cracks, or repairs; the bowl is preserved in excellent vintage condition, with only minimal signs of use and a gentle patina appropriate to its age.
This centerpiece carries the spirit of interwar modernism, when art glass became a field of bold experimentation and Karl Wiedmann was charting new directions at WMF. The bowl 'speaks' of an era in which color and light were sculpted as material—its transparent glass deepened by crackling and layered transitions, reminiscent of an abstract landscape. Every reflection on its surface evokes the mood of modernist interiors, where utilitarian objects were also meant for contemplation. The Ikora pattern appears to capture movement, expressing the dynamic
