ABOUT PRODUCTID 1909
This decorative bowl, designed by Jan Kotik for Skrdlovice glassworks in 1955, is a notable example of Czech mid-century avant-garde. Hand-formed from crystal glass and ground flat at the base, it is distinguished by its organic, asymmetrical silhouette characteristic of the 'Propeller' series. The surface displays a captivating gradient of colors: from deep amethyst purple, through saturated blue, to a vivid green at the base. Thick, rounded edges flow into undulating, sculptural lines, while the glass’s high-gloss finish accentuates the interplay of light and color. The bottom is smoothly polished, attesting to meticulous finishing. The bowl remains in excellent condition – with no chips, cracks, or signs of wear; the glass retains its original clarity and shine. In its form, the spirit of Central European modernism is palpable—the glass tells a story from the 1950s, when artists sought freedom in shape and color. The bowl seems to capture a moment in motion—as if flowing water had been stilled in glass, its color transitions evoking the era’s experiments with material and light. This object not only decorates but extends the narrative of Czech design: bold, unconventional, and always looking forward. It may be displayed on a low wooden or stone table, where daylight reveals the full spectrum of the glass’s colors. The piece works well within classic mid-century modern interiors and eclectic collector’s settings alike. Pairing it with simple ceramics or metal elements will let its organic shape and saturated hues take center stage. In a modern living room, the bowl can serve as a statement piece, drawing the eye and anchoring the surrounding space.
