ABOUT PRODUCTID 11592
This Japanese lacquered wooden box from the early 20th century was crafted using the traditional urushi technique. The rectangular form features gently curved sides and rounded edges, reflecting the minimalist aesthetics characteristic of its era. The lid is finished in a muted, warm rust-red with a matte to satin sheen, adorned with a hand-painted black and gold motif of a bird—likely a crane or peacock—standing on a stylized branch. The painting stands out for its precise lines and subtle shading. The sides of the box are in a deep, almost black-brown tone, contrasting with the lighter lid. The seamless construction, with no visible joints, attests to the high level of craftsmanship. The condition is very good, with only minor abrasions and a natural patina typical of authentic pieces from this period, and no significant damage or traces of restoration. This box carries the voice of early 20th-century Japanese aesthetics: a story of material harmony, refined form, and masterful attention to detail. The bird motif on the lid evokes symbols of longevity and serenity, while the soft sheen of the lacquer suggests the quiet of a domestic interior where every object had its place. Gentle signs of wear and patina seem to whisper of past rituals and careful daily use—as if the box preserves memories of gestures made decades ago.The lacquer box can be paired with other oriental accents such as a ceramic tea bowl, bamboo tray, or artwork inspired by Japanese minimalism. It would sit well on a low console of dark wood, among simple textures like linen or silk. For a collector’s arrangement, it could be combined with a handwoven rug or glazed porcelain to highlight its refined provenance. In japandi, eclectic, or classic interiors, it brings an element of focus and understated sophistication.
