This rectangular Japanese lacquer box, dating from the early 20th century, exemplifies traditional Japanese decorative craftsmanship in a refined version. The lid, finished in a deep, nearly black high-gloss lacquer, contrasts with the base and sides in matte, reddish-brown tones. The top is adorned with a hand-painted motif – a golden-yellow bird perched on a branch surrounded by red and yellow blossoms and delicate greenish foliage – rendered in a style typical of the era, with Art Nouveau influence visible in the naturalistic flow and arrangement. Fine, delicate brushstrokes add lightness to the floral fantasy, while the box’s overall form remains understated: there is no visible hardware, and the construction is strictly rectangular, with a clear division between lid and body. The sides and bottom are plain, marked by natural wear: fine cracks and minor lacquer chips, as well as areas of exposed underlayer at the edges and corners, bear witness to authentic age and use. The joinery and decoration are consistent with early 20th-century Japanese writing or accessory boxes from the Meiji and Taishō periods. Preserved in good condition, with visible signs of typical use from items of this era. This object still conveys the spirit of its time:
