ABOUT PRODUCTID 36909
This Secessionist-Neoclassical box-shaped sugar bowl, produced by Arthur Krupp in Berndorf circa 1920, exemplifies early 20th-century European metalwork where geometric precision meets classical symmetry. Measuring 14 × 10 × 8.5 cm, it is crafted from white brass plated with silver, lending it a cool, mirror-like sheen. The body is adorned with delicate guilloché patterns in a fine mesh, while the lid features a stepped profile and central cartouche with subtle engraved ornament. The keyhole is shielded by an ornate escutcheon, though the original key is no longer present. All elements are precisely fitted, resting on a slightly elevated base; proportions are balanced and construction demonstrates the renowned Berndorf craftsmanship. The underside bears the maker’s mark—a bear silhouette—and factory signatures. Condition is very good, with the silver layer intact and gleaming, the interior clean and free from damage or restoration.Though utilitarian, the sugar bowl evokes an era when the ritual of serving tea or coffee expressed domestic celebration and refined taste. Its geometric decoration and harmonious form recall the restrained elegance of the interwar period, when Berndorf’s plated wares graced imperial courts and Viennese cafés alike. The guilloché surface captures light in a subtle, graphic interplay, while the heraldic cartouche hints at the lineage or household that once imbued it with meaning. This piece may be placed on a classically set table or presented decoratively on a console or in a display case, where its silvery texture becomes a discreet accent. It can be paired with other silver-plated or porcelain pieces from the era, or contrasted with contemporary ceramics and glass to bridge styles. Interiors inspired by Art Deco, historic modernism, or
