ABOUT PRODUCTID 16790
This brutalist candlestick from the 1970s, crafted by Czesław Palczewski, is made primarily of metal—mainly aged brass with a golden yellow tone enriched by brown and greenish patina hallmarks of genuine vintage. The broad base provides stability for a robust vertical column, to which four irregular, hand-hammered brass plates are mounted symmetrically, each fixed with an expressive, hand-forged rivet. A matte, almost black panel shields one side of the core, creating a bold contrast with the metallic sheen. The upper part features a subtly concave dish to hold a candle. Every surface reveals dense, raw textures and visible hammer marks—the deliberate irregularities underscore the narrative of 1970s brutalism, where the trace of the artisan’s hand was celebrated. The geometry is monumental yet balanced, evoking architectural rhythms. Overall condition is good—no structural damage or losses, only original patina and color variations reflecting the tradition of handcrafted art metalwork. This piece carries the voice of the Polish brutalist movement—an era when metal spoke its own language and the artisan’s mark was left honestly on every part. The candlestick seems to narrate its time, rejecting smooth finishes in favor of raw material honesty, its mass echoing the optimism and emerging severity of postwar industrial aesthetics. Each plate and every rivet evoke the sense of careful, intentional composition—a miniature monument to gravity and authenticity, inscribed with the signature of its time. The candlestick can be placed on a simple walnut-veneered console or sideboard, functioning as a sculptural focal point in interiors inspired
