ABOUT PRODUCTID 16699
This set of a candlestick and ashtray, designed by Hugo Berger at the Goberg workshop in Germany, dates from the early 20th century and represents the Arts & Crafts aesthetic. Both pieces are crafted from steel and brass, dominated by subdued silvery-grey steel tones with warm brown and gold brass highlights. The surfaces display a matte to lightly satin finish, bringing out the tactile metal textures and the notable weight of early-century craftsmanship—there are pronounced decorative rivets, cylindrical bases, and straightforward vertical handles, with the ashtray’s ending in a crescent-moon motif and the candlestick’s topped by a broad candle holder. Devoid of unnecessary ornament, these objects focus on artisanal precision and geometric simplicity. The construction emphasizes solidity and practicality: features such as the decorative rivets and restrained, symmetrical proportions lend authenticity to their handcrafted origins. Condition is described as excellent, with no signs of repair or significant damage—only natural discoloration and a gentle patina appropriate to their age remain visible. The tactile and visual presence of these objects echoes the spirit of the early 20th century—an era in which craft met a new understanding of the daily object, stripped of extraneous ornament and honest about materiality. Here steel and brass bear witness to a time seeking authenticity in simplicity; the tactile rivets recall the craftsman’s hand, and the crescent detail quietly evokes the kind of nocturnal stories that unfold
