ABOUT PRODUCTID 17570
The cardholder “Juhas na hali”, designed by Franciszek Kalfas for the Ćmielów porcelain factory between 1942 and 1944, is crafted entirely from glossy white glazed porcelain. The object features a sculptural, simplified depiction of a shepherd standing atop an irregularly shaped base, its edges adorned with stylized sheep modeled in subtle bas-relief. The minimalist, distinctly modernist design is emblematic of Polish decorative art from the 1940s. Figurative elements are reduced and softly rounded, clearly echoing the modern sculptural trends of the period. The entire piece is rendered in a uniform, cool white tone without additional color or painted accents; the porcelain’s surface remains impeccably smooth and lustrous. This cardholder balances both decorative and functional roles, equally suitable for daily use or as a vintage collectors’ display. Condition: very good, with no signs of wear, damage, or discoloration. The object subtly resonates with the spirit of post-war modernism—its simplicity evokes hopes for order and harmony in daily life. The porcelain’s cool sheen gently reflects the light, akin to morning frost on an alpine meadow, while the herd of sheep imbued along the undulating edge recalls the gentle rhythm of mountain pastures. Kalfas’ thoughtful abstraction offers a quiet tribute to his time—marked by restraint, self-possession, and an enduring attentiveness to the world around. This cardholder would be well suited to both a traditional study enriched with natural woods and brass details, as well as a modern collector’s interior where the subtle white porcelain accentuates the austerity of concrete or glass. It may be combined with other mid-century ceramics or placed on a console among books and small artworks. Setting it against a matte surface or simple linen napkin can further emphasize the soft gleam of porcelain, allowing the piece to act as an understated but distinctive accent within a refined arrangement
