ABOUT PRODUCTID 12249
This set of four wooden chairs, designed by Oswald Haerdtl for TON (formerly Thonet-Mundus), was produced in Czechoslovakia during the 1950s. The construction utilizes solid wood in a warm, medium-to-dark brown tone, finished with a semi-gloss polish that highlights the natural grain and subtle color variations of the material. The gently curved, ergonomic backrests flow seamlessly into the seat, while two symmetrical, arched cut-outs lend the piece a sculptural and airy quality. The seats are slightly contoured for comfort, and the round, tapered legs splay outward to provide both stability and visual lightness. Careful joinery and meticulous finishing are evident throughout. The chairs are preserved in very good, original condition, with only minimal, age-appropriate signs of use seen in vintage pieces. These chairs embody the spirit of post-war Central European modernism—a narrative of functional elegance and the democratization of good design. The oval cut-outs in the backrest evoke the era's search for lightness and permeability, even in small details. Oswald Haerdtl, both architect and designer, created everyday objects for Thonet and TON that, decades later, retain their freshness—as if still telling stories of optimism and order from that period. The chairs can be paired with a large natural wood table or a minimalist table with metal legs, emphasizing material contrast. They work well in mid-century modern interiors as well as in eclectic, collector's spaces where sculptural lines and authenticity matter. They could be combined with muted textiles or graphite accessories to accentuate the wood's warm tone. The set also fits effortlessly at a desk or in a dining area, surrounded by vintage ceramics and soft light diffused by a classic lampshade.
