The Cross Swinger, designed by Till Behrens in the early 1980s following developments from the 1950s for German manufacturer Schlubach, is a study in postmodern precision and experiment. Constructed entirely from chrome-plated steel rods, the chair presents a geometric, openwork silhouette in a cool, silver hue. Parallel horizontal rods form both the seat and the tall, slightly reclined backrest, while intersecting angular lines define a dynamic, cross-shaped outline typical of postmodern aesthetics. The proportions are slender and elongated, standing on two sled-like legs with small black plastic feet. The finish is meticulously executed: seamless welds and hidden joints enhance the purity of the form, and the chrome surface is smooth and lustrous, with only minor scratches or slight dulling from age and use. The chair remains in good vintage condition with authentic, original elements and no significant repairs or modifications.
This piece echoes the transition between eras: the discipline of modernism meeting the playful experimentation of the 1980s. The metallic surface reflects light like a pane of glass, while the open structure suggests lightness and a postmodern dialogue with tradition.
