ABOUT PRODUCTID 20188
The Fledermaus 728 chair, designed by Josef Hoffmann in the early 20th century and produced by Vienna’s Thonet Mundus, features a bentwood construction in a deep, warm reddish-brown with a matte finish. The surface shows visible scuffs, scratches, and patina, especially along the edges and contact points, which enhance its authentic historical character. The semi-circular, gently bent backrest is composed of three horizontal slats—a hallmark of Viennese Secession style—while the straight, slender legs, adorned with subtle vertical grooves near the top, are joined by softly curved stretchers that echo the backrest’s geometry. The seat is upholstered in a beige-brown fabric with a decorative floral pattern, providing a soft contrast to the wooden frame’s geometry. The upholstery displays signs of fading and wear, consistent with the chair’s age. Artisanal details and harmonious proportions affirm the authenticity of the design. The original paper manufacturer’s label remains intact beneath the seat. Condition: visible scratches, scuffs, and upholstery fading; the structure is stable and original, with no evidence of modern restoration. This chair quietly narrates the dawn of modernism—a time when Hoffmann envisioned a new Vienna, emphasizing clarity and function without abandoning decorative gestures. The matte wood and soft fabric pattern recall the atmosphere of early 20th-century Viennese cafés, where art and daily life intertwined over conversations among artists and architects. Every scratch and scuff tells of
