ABOUT PRODUCTID 10149
This armchair designed by Josef Hoffmann for TON is a prime example of early modernist design from 1930s Czechoslovakia. The construction features bent oak wood with a warm, honey-toned finish, coated in a smooth semi-gloss lacquer that accentuates the natural grain. Characteristic softly curved armrests and legs merge seamlessly into a light, harmonious silhouette, reflecting the Thonet tradition. The seat and backrest are upholstered in plush golden velvet with a matte sheen, tautly and evenly stretched. Four slender, slightly splayed legs are connected by a rounded stretcher, providing stability and reinforcing the geometric discipline of the design. The original TON label attests to its authenticity. The chair is in restored condition: all components are immaculate, with a gentle, genuine patina to the wood. The form of this chair evokes the spirit of early twentieth-century modernist exploration, where functionality met understated decoration. The soft curves of the bent oak speak of a fascination with craftsmanship and modernity, while the golden velvet subtly recalls a time when comfort was as prized as clean lines. This chair could be imagined as speaking with the voice of a Viennese café, its arched arms inviting conversation and the warmth of its upholstery encouraging quiet reflection—a piece that easily transports one to a world where tradition and innovation lived side by side. The chair can be paired with a classic Art Deco veneered table or a minimalist desk of light marble or black glass. In a collector’s interior, it will fit well among geometric rugs
