This Japanese chest from the Meiji period is a refined example of early 20th-century craftsmanship, originating during the reign of Emperor Mutsuhito. The body and legs are crafted from wood, finished with a deep, reddish-brown lacquer that lends a soft, semi-gloss sheen. The fronts of the three drawers are adorned with hand-painted motifs in gold, cream, and muted green—naturalistic scenes with larks, tree branches, and a traditional Japanese pagoda, each rendered with precise lines and a subtly raised texture. The patinated copper handles, mounted on floral rosettes, highlight the attention to detail.
