ABOUT PRODUCTID 12243
This mahogany coffee table, designed by Frantisek Mezulanik and produced by UP Zavody in 1969 in the Czech Republic, exemplifies Central European modernism of the late 20th century. The design features a rectangular top measuring 140 × 57 cm, supported by four slender, subtly splayed legs that taper downward. The mahogany wood, with its visible grain running lengthwise across the surface, presents a warm, medium brown tone with a gentle reddish hue. The satin finish enhances the natural texture, imparting a restrained, understated depth. The construction is free from visible hardware or ornamentation, with precise joinery reflecting the quality craftsmanship. The table remains in very good, original condition, showing no signs of wear, damage, or restoration. This piece tells the story of the 1960s, when functionality and purity of form became the new language of everyday living, and wood—rather than decoration—became the main embellishment. Its proportions and lightness evoke the atmosphere of Czechoslovakian modernist interiors: calm, harmonious, and open to light. The slender legs seem to lift the tabletop above the floor, as if the table is meant to highlight the freedom of space and enable daily rituals—without pretense, in the spirit of the era’s practical elegance. The table could be paired with a sofa featuring a strong silhouette or armchairs on slim wooden legs to emphasize the dialogue of geometric forms. It would work well in mid-century modern arrangements as well as eclectic collector’s spaces, where the noble mahogany could contrast with light upholstery, raw ceramics, or a minimalist lamp. It is worth combining it with a low-pile rug and period graphics to bring out its architectural proportions.
