ABOUT PRODUCTID 27368
The 'Pepper Young' coffee table was designed by Philippe Starck in 1983 for the Spanish brand Disform. Its construction features a square, transparent glass top with softly rounded corners and a subtly beveled edge, resting on four cylindrical black metal legs. A distinctive detail is the use of large, matte rubber spheres—both decorative and functional—as mounts for the glass surface. The legs are set vertically on wide, flat bases, and the visible screw fittings at their bases emphasize the table’s industrial character. The interplay of transparent glass, matte black metal, and softly textured rubber reflects the postmodern avant-garde of the early 1980s, creating a dynamic contrast of forms and finishes. Dimensions are 90 × 90 cm with a height of 30 cm. Condition: good, with visible signs of use and patina to the glass and metal, no major defects, underscoring its authentic vintage character. This table echoes the voice of the 1980s, speaking in tones of playfulness and boldness, where industrial precision meets postmodern irony. The glass top catches and reflects light and its surroundings, while the prominent rubber spheres challenge traditional proportions. It is a piece that lays bare its own construction—screws, metal, rubber, and glass working together in a transparent dialogue, as if Starck sought to narrate an era when design embraced both function and a subtle sense of provocation. The 'Pepper Young' table could be paired with a minimalist sofa in a neutral palette or with armchairs of sculptural form, allowing its geometry to take center stage. It would suit classic modernist interiors as well as more eclectic, collector-oriented spaces. It is worth combining with accessories in black or chrome—such as a sculptural lamp or ceramic accents—and placing a textile rug underneath to highlight the contrast between the glass top’s transparency and the matte finish of the base.
