ABOUT PRODUCTID 41464
This miniature cabinet sculpture, crafted in cold-painted bronze, depicts a dachshund and dates to the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, within the tradition of Viennese animal bronzes. The piece was cast as a single unit, resulting in a compact and coherent form. The surface features remnants of polychrome applied by cold painting, especially visible in the lower parts, where reddish and orange tones create a nuanced depth and worn areas reveal the warm, golden-bronze base metal. Accents of black and deep brown along the back, ears, and tail give the dog a naturalistic colouring. Anatomical details – musculature, fur texture, expression, and paw placement – showcase the high sculptural precision characteristic of late 19th-century Viennese craftsmanship. The condition is described as very good: there is an authentic patina, minor signs of age, and preserved fragments of the original polychrome, with no damage or repairs. This figurine seems to carry the discreet voice of the belle époque – evoking a cabinet setting where applied art and affection for animals met under the glow of gaslight. With its elongated silhouette and alert gaze, the dachshund recalls the atmosphere of fin-de-siècle Viennese interiors, when animal miniatures were not only desk ornaments but also symbolic daily companions. Traces of paint and subtle patina suggest the sculpture has witnessed changing times – from Habsburg salons to Kraków homes, where dachshunds have become beloved icons. It may be displayed on a classic writing desk or library shelf, surrounded by leather-bound books and refined accessories – such as brass writing implements or glass inkwells. The sculpture fits well in cabinet, collector,
