This Japanese Meiji-era lacquer box (late 19th – early 20th century) exemplifies masterful craftsmanship in urushi lacquer, applied over a wooden base. The form is elongated and subtly faceted, with gently chamfered corners and a slightly convex lid. The primary hue is a muted, cool olive-grey with a satin-matte finish, enhanced by a delicate mottled pattern reminiscent of fish scales or drifting clouds, lending visual depth and refinement. The lid and sides feature meticulously hand-painted gold and warm reddish-orange motifs: two stylised birds in flight, a branch with blossoms and berries, all rendered with careful anatomical detail and expressive brushwork, testifying to the artistry of Meiji-era Japanese lacquer masters. A small, flush-fitted escutcheon in dark metal blends discreetly into the front; the proportions (28 × 8.5 × 6 cm) are balanced and refined, with a smooth, tactile finish throughout. The condition is very good, with only minimal signs of age such as light edge wear and an authentic patina that emphasises the object's provenance and historical value.This box echoes the spirit of its era, when Japan was opening to the world and craftsmanship embodied harmony with nature.
