This glass tortoise container, attributed to the workshop of Curt Schlevogt, was crafted in 1960s Czechoslovakia as a refined example of mid-century Art Deco glassmaking. The tortoise’s body and head are modeled in malachite-green pressed glass with a matte, stone-like texture expertly imitating the character of the mineral; rendered details include tactile leg patterns, expressive facial contours, and gently grainy surfaces recalling natural tortoise skin. The removable shell, which serves as a lid, is made from thick, clear glass with a crystalline gloss and deeply moulded relief – convincingly rendering the segmentation of a real tortoise shell. The union of matte and glossy surfaces, as well as the seamless integration of both parts, exemplifies Central European glass artistry of that era. Proportions are naturalistic, yet marked by stylisation characteristic of Bohemian Art Deco. The piece remains in excellent collector’s condition: no visible damage, chips, or restoration marks, only minimal signs of careful vintage preservation in accordance with its age.
