ABOUT PRODUCTID 42191
This decorative Kyō-Satsuma plate, measuring 26 cm in diameter, was crafted from porcelain and hand-decorated by the Nishida manufactory in Kyoto at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, during the Meiji era. The deep, cinnabar-red background—a hallmark of this Satsuma variety—serves as the canvas for a rich central motif of delicately painted butterflies and flowering branches in shades of cream, yellow, green, and brown. The rim features an ornate border in gold and silver, highlighted with subtle pink accents arranged in a stylized, cloud-inspired pattern. The surface is smooth and meticulously finished, with hand-applied gilding that lends a shimmering, opulent effect. A metal wire hanger affixed to the reverse allows the plate to be displayed on the wall. The piece is preserved in very good collector’s condition, showing no visible cracks or losses, and only minimal signs of age. This plate resonates with the voice of Meiji-era Japan—a period when traditional craftsmanship engaged with a fascination for modernity. The motif of butterflies and blossoming branches tells a story of transience and the beauty of nature, while the hand-applied gilding catches the light like morning mist over Kyoto gardens. Satsuma ware of this era avoided ostentation, instead inviting close observation of detail and immersion in the richness of ornament and subtle color transitions. Each brushstroke reveals the craftsman's care for composition, with the intention to both adorn and narrate. The plate may be displayed on the wall using its attached hanger, or placed on a shelf among other collectible objects: it harmonizes well with classic wooden vitrines as
