This Empire-style desk from circa 1880 is a refined example of French antique craftsmanship, marked by its elegant construction and subtle decorative richness. Made of mahogany in a deep, reddish-brown hue, the desk features balanced, rectangular proportions. The top is finished with a green leather writing surface, framed by an embossed gilt border that adds a sense of prestige. Four straight, tapered legs are connected by a gracefully curved X-shaped stretcher, providing both visual lightness and stability. Typical Empire-style ormolu (gilt bronze) mounts and brass fittings—including escutcheons, drawer pulls, and decorative motifs at the apron and leg collars—create a cohesive classical rhythm. Functionality is ensured by five drawers: two on each side and a central one, each with intricate dovetail joinery and richly detailed handles.
