This Napoleon III era French desk set with bell, crafted circa 1860–1870, exemplifies the refined synthesis of utility and decorative flourish characteristic of mid-19th-century France. The construction features ebonized wood polished to a deep, glossy black, forming the base for an array of pressed and cast, gilded brass details: rims, fittings, bell, and ornate mounts. The ensemble includes two faceted, clear crystal inkwells with lids of black wood and gilded brass, a central gold-plated dish for nibs or clips, and a raised, circular stand lined with deep burgundy velvet designed to cradle a pocket watch. Integrated within the base is a functional bell with a hammer and spring mechanism.
