This French desk set from the early 20th century exemplifies decorative craftsmanship of the Art Nouveau era, crafted from black marble and bronze. The centerpiece is a sculpted, naturalistic bronze horse, placed atop a rectangular, tiered plinth. Flanking the horse, two symmetrical inkwells are made from the same bronze with a warm, dark brown patina, subtly accented with golden highlights. The base comprises polished black marble, dramatically veined in white, with beveled edges highlighted by a fine gold-bronze trim. The composition harmonizes rectilinear geometry with gentle flowing curves—the set appears visually substantial yet achieves balanced proportions. To the touch, the cold marble plays against the smoothness and depth of the bronze patina.
