ABOUT PRODUCTID 20204
This Austrian door knocker from around 1900 exemplifies the refined craftsmanship of the Viennese Secession. Crafted from chased and gilded brass, the piece displays a warm, golden hue subtly enriched by a natural patina, lending depth and authenticity to its surface. The rectangular backplate—with a rounded top and beveled corners—is adorned with raised garlands and geometric reliefs, echoing the signature Art Nouveau style of flowing, organic lines and balanced symmetry. The robust, angular handle is attached with decorative rivets, complemented by fine relief details and an original catalog number (200) on the reverse. The construction is solid and weighty, designed with durability and everyday function in mind: historically, an electric bell switch was often installed below the knocker, activated by lifting or pulling the handle. With dimensions of 14.5 cm in height and 7.6 cm in width, the proportion remains harmonious, while gentle surface scratches and oxidation marks attest to its age. The overall condition is very good—there is no significant damage or repair, and the craftsmanship details remain crisp. This piece tells the story of the turn of the 20th century, when the Art Nouveau movement brought organic softness and natural motifs into everyday objects. It recalls a time when the entrance to a home was a moment of ceremony, with every door detail hinting at the character within.
