ABOUT PRODUCTID 16154
The Norwegian drinking horn from the 1920s, attributed to the workshop of Aksel Holmsen, exemplifies a vessel of distinctive historical form and folk-inspired character. Crafted from solid tin, the horn is finished in a matte, silvery grey, subtly highlighted by a soft, antique patina to its surface. Meticulous engraving defines the piece: repeating bands of stylized four-petal flowers and geometric motifs accentuate the upper and lower sections. The uppermost band is distinguished by a medallion detail at the front, while the body sweeps elegantly from a wide mouth to a sharply tapering tip capped with a small decorative finial. Two sculpted, animal-like feet provide a zoomorphic accent and assure the horn’s stability when displayed. The overall condition is excellent, with only the lightest traces of age—gentle surface abrasion that speaks to its authenticity but reveals no major damage or restoration.
This horn carries the echo of medieval Norwegian feasting traditions, when such vessels bore both symbolic and practical significance. The cool, matte tin seems to whisper stories of ancient gatherings, while the rhythmic pattern of floral and geometric bands tells of the artisan’s hand and the Nordic sense of order. The sculpted animal feet evoke creatures from Northern mythologies, granting the horn a presence that feels rooted in legend.
The Holmsen horn may be displayed atop an oak console or stone mantelpiece, where natural light will draw out the matte lustre of tin. It suits a collector’s study beside antique books, or a living
