ABOUT PRODUCTID 17182
This French desk inkwell, crafted at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, consists of polished beige onyx suffused with subtle, creamy pink marble veining. The ornately contoured base rests on four rounded onyx feet, displaying asymmetry typical of the Art Nouveau period. Two heavy, faceted crystal inkwells with broad, bell-shaped bodies and matte metal screw tops (likely silver- or pewter-plated) stand at each end. Centrally, an elevated onyx bowl is supported by a short, decorative metal stem in a golden-brown tone, featuring stamped foliate designs synonymous with late French Art Nouveau. The consistent use of onyx, cut crystal, and patinated metal reinforces the distinction of a refined writing accessory for the study or living room. The condition is very good: the onyx remains intact, inkwells are complete with only a minor 'flea bite' chip on the underside of one, and the metalwork shows authentic light patina. The form of this ecritoire echoes the language of the Belle Époque—a time when meticulous detail met the refinement of everyday objects. Silky onyx strata, gentle curves, and organic metal ornamentation evoke an era for which beauty and function were deeply intertwined. Every glint from the crystal inkpot recalls the small rituals of morning correspondence, while the stone’s warmth infuses a gentle, scholarly mood reminiscent of early 20th-century interiors. This inkwell would suit a dark wooden writing desk, accentuating the onyx’s hues and the material’s nobility. Paired with an Art Nouveau lamp or a collection of steel pens, it could form the focal point of a collector’s salon,
