This Empire-style desk set from the early 20th century exemplifies neoclassical design through its monumental geometry and opulent combination of materials. The rectangular, highly polished marble tray—richly veined in deep reddish-brown—forms the base, supported by four decorative gilded bronze feet. Two square, faceted crystal inkwells with heavy, ormolu lids anchor the composition, their crisp edges and substantial weight reinforcing the set’s stately presence. Between them sits a raised, round bronze dish, intended for small writing accessories. A matching marble and bronze rocker blotter completes the ensemble. Laurel wreath motifs and finely chased bronze details add a classical accent, while the interplay of cool marble, sharply cut crystal, and matte gold bronze evokes a sense of ceremonial order. Surfaces shift from the smooth, cool touch of stone to the crisp brilliance of glass and the sculpted tactility of bronze.
