ABOUT PRODUCTID 11690
This monumental Empire-style jardiniere from late 19th-century Poland exemplifies the neoclassical aesthetic of its era. Crafted from thick silver-plated brass, its surface reveals a predominance of warm, matte silver with subtle gilded highlights, especially on the raised reliefs and central medallion. The robust body rests on three decorative, shell-motif feet, and is adorned with high-relief mythological centaurs, flowing vegetal scrolls, and a central oval medallion. Geometric handles with leafy embellishments showcase the precision of late 19th-century craftsmanship. Inside, the original glass liner fits snugly within the metal frame. The piece exhibits a natural, even patina and minor wear consistent with age, but shows no signs of repairs or modern interventions. The overall condition is very good, with only delicate traces of use and all elements appearing authentic. The jardiniere gives voice to the late 19th century—a period when neoclassicism was an intentional aesthetic choice and everyday objects became miniature works of art. The matte metal surface and gilded reliefs evoke memories of salons where candlelight would catch on the centaur ornaments, and the opulence of the form reflected the owner’s status and taste. Its ornamentation speaks of a fascination with antiquity and a longing for the order and harmony of classical proportions, serving as a testament to the era’s pursuit of balance and splendor. This jardiniere may be paired with a classical console or chest of drawers from the Biedermeier or Empire period, where its monumental decorative character would enhance a historical interior. It could also function as a solitary accent on a contemporary marble surface, creating contrast with minimalist accessories. Combining it with heavier textiles such as velvet or mohair, or juxtaposing it with geometric wall art, would break with tradition and lend the arrangement an individual, collector’s sensibility.
