This hand-colored etching, attributed to Konrad Horny after Carl Wolff and dating to the late 18th century, was created in Germany. Entitled 'Todenwarth, Im Helltal,' the artwork depicts a classical landscape with a prominent architectural structure atop a hill—an iconic motif of European landscape art from this period. The naturalistic green foliage and warm, earthy tones of the hills and rock formations are rendered with precision, while the roofs display subtle terracotta and muted red hues. The composition is unified by a light, graded sky, enhancing the scene's calm balance. The etching itself measures 15.5 × 12.5 cm, mounted within an off-white wide mat and housed in a wooden frame with a black outer edge and gilt, lightly aged inner border. The overall framed dimensions are 27 × 25 cm. Preserved in excellent condition, the only notable imperfection is a slight chip to the lower left of the frame, a mark of its long history; otherwise, both artwork and presentation remain largely true to their original era.
There is a quiet narrative running through this landscape, reflecting the era’s devotion to order and architectural expression within the natural world. The delicate linework and nuanced coloring invite contemplation, echoing the late Enlightenment fascination with harmony between nature and
