ABOUT PRODUCTID 15320
This 18th-century etching by Johann Elias Ridinger depicts a wild boar set within a naturalistic mountain landscape. Executed in classical engraving technique on paper, the composition features a monochromatic palette of blacks, greys, and whites. Stark contrasts and refined tonal transitions accentuate the three-dimensionality of the scene, rendering both the animal’s fur and the rugged topography with exceptional precision. The main subject – the wild boar – is caught in dynamic motion, surrounded by dense foliage, rocky outcrops and gnarled trunks that reinforce the realism. The lower register of the print is dominated by an ample cartouche with calligraphic writing, recording the date 1785, the dedication, and the artwork’s provenance. The paper retains a soft cream hue distinctive for well-preserved works of the period, with subtly untrimmed, uneven edges. The matte surface finish, together with the visible plate mark, testifies to the authenticity of traditional printmaking techniques. The print is in very good condition: no visible tears or stains, only minor age-related yellowing or sporadic foxing on the margins attest to its age.
A true product of the Old Master tradition, Ridinger’s drawing
